FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and you've chosen to switch gas and electricity providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new gas and electricity provider will give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days during which you can change your mind and remain with your current energy provider.
No. You won't need to do any of that. The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). That distributor continues to supply the gas and electricity to your premises even if you change to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your gas and electricity bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy gas and electricity directly from a distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your gas and electricity supply because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often in less than 24 hours. However, the switchover cannot take place until after your old provider has issued you a final bill, and they cannot do that until after your next meter reading. Therefore, it depends on how soon your next meter reading is. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and will tell your present provider that you're moving to another provider. The changeover to the new provider won't happen immediately, though, because your current provider has to do one final meter reading. then issue you their final bill. The new provider will start charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that feeds the energy to your home continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by your new gas and electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips for reducing your electricity usage to save money

Here are some easy to implement tips for reducing your usage of electricity

  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear warm clothing (beanie, booties, warm socks, jumper).
  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air entering or escaping via gaps under doors or around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Turn off all appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Minimise use of your clothes dryer. Hang your clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating rooms by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Use less lighting by using natural light where possible and replace older lights with energy efficient LED lights.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening allow the cooler air in, and closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that you aren't using, so you only cool or heat a smaller area.
