Electricity Market Competition in Qld

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a deregulation since the late 1990s. The first stage involved establishing a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in another state.

The next step, which happened sooner in some states than others, was the dividing up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to create better competition the energy market was split into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors have the responsibility for the delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers sell the electricity to the customers and are responsible for billing. Every state has between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

South East Queensland 's electricity market was completely deregulated on 1 July 2016 . This allowed consumers to switch to the provider that had the cheapest electricity prices.

There are two distributors who supply electricity to Queensland

  • Energex
The Energex network distributes electricity to homes and businesses in a region covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, that stretches from the NSW border in the south to Gympie in the north. This includes the major population areas of Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Redlands and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
The Ergon Energy network services Queensland including coastal and rural areas as well as the remote communities of outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Reduce your energy bills with these electricity -saving tips

Here are a few easy to implement tips to reduce your expenditure on electricity

  • Instead of turning on the heater, dress for cold weather (beanie, warm socks, jumper, booties).
  • Reduce usage of the clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Turn off all your appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Reduce draughts. Minimise hot or cold air getting in or out through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows during the night to allow the cool air in, and shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
  • Minimise lighting. Rely on natural light if possible. Turn lights off when you leave the room.
  • Close doors to rooms that you don't use, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Stop the hot sun from over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.

FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and you have made the decision that you want to switch gas and electricity providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new gas and electricity provider will give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and go back to your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). This distributor continues to supply gas and electricity to your house even when you switch to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your gas and electricity bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't purchase gas and electricity directly from the distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, your gas and electricity supply won't be interrupted because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, usually within 24 hours. However, the final switchover cannot happen until your present provider has issued your final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we will inform your current provider that you're switching away from them. The actual transfer to your new provider will not happen immediately, because the old provider needs to do a final meter reading. and then issue you a final bill. Your new provider will begin charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your premises continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. However, we will receive a commission from your new gas and electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
