Electricity Market Competition in SA

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a deregulation since the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to a different state.

The next stage, which happened earlier in some states, was the splitting up of state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to promote better competition the market was divided into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors look after the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers do all the interacting with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. States have from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

South Australia 's electricity market was fully deregulated on 1 July 2013 . This enabled customers to change to whichever provider offered the cheapest electricity prices.

South Australia only has one main electricity distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks distributes electricity throughout South Australia
  • Note, some remote areas of SA are supplied by companies other than SA Power Networks.

Tips for reducing electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here is a list of easy to implement tips for reducing your expenditure on electricity

  • Turn appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Dress for the weather, instead of turning on the heater (warm socks, beanie, jumper, booties).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Reduce draughts. Minimise hot or cold air getting in or getting out through the gaps under doors or around windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Use your clothes dryer less. Instead, dry clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Reduce your use of lights by using natural light where possible. Turn lights off when there's no on in the room.
  • Close the doors to areas of your home that you aren't using, so that you only cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Prevent the hot sun over-heating your home by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening the windows during the night to allow the house cool down, then closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.

FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and have made the decision that you want to switch electricity and gas providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new electricity and gas provider must give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days to change your mind and go back to your current energy provider.
Definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply the electricity and gas to your house even after you change to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity and gas bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity and gas directly from the distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that there won't be any interruption to your electricity and gas supply when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, usually within 24 hours. But the final switchover cannot go ahead until after your current provider has sent you a final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. So, it depends on how long until your meter is next due to be read. It be up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we also notify your present provider that you are changing to another retailer. The actual changeover to the new provider won't happen straight away, though, because your current provider will need to do a final meter reading. and then issue you a final bill. The new provider starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor who feeds the energy to your home will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will receive a commission from the new electricity and gas provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
