Electricity Market Competition in Qld

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first step involved establishing a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in another state.

The next stage, which happened sooner in some states than others, was the splitting up of state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to promote a greater degree of competition the market was split into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors have the responsibility for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and maintain the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers sell the electricity to the customers and are responsible for billing. Each state has between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The South East Queensland electricity market was fully deregulated on 1 July 2016. This allowed customers to switch to the provider who offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in Queensland is supplied by two distributors

  • Energex
Energex distributes electricity to homes and businesses in an area covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, stretching from the NSW border in the south to Gympie in the north. This covers the major population areas of Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
Ergon Energy services Queensland including coastal and rural areas and remote communities in outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Save money with these electricity -saving tips

Here are some easy to implement tips to reduce your electricity consumption

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise draughts. Prevent hot or cold air getting in or getting out via gaps under doors or around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, dress for the weather (warm socks, jumper, beanie, booties).
  • Turn off all your appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Reduce use of the clothes dryer. Instead, dry your clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Use less lighting. Rely on natural light if possible.
  • Stop the hot sun from over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening let the house cool down, and closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Close the doors to rooms that you don't use, so that you just heat or cool a smaller space.

FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and have decided to switch electricity and gas providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity and gas provider will give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to cancel the process and remain with your old energy provider.
No, definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). That distributor will continue to supply the electricity and gas to your house even if you switch to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity and gas bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity and gas directly from your distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, your electricity and gas supply won't be interrupted because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in under 24 hours. However, the switchover cannot take place until your current provider has issued you your final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on when your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will notify your current provider that you are switching away from them. The actual change to your new provider won't happen immediately, because the old provider will need to do a meter reading one final time. and then issue you their final bill. Your new provider will start charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that feeds the energy to your premises continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. However, we will receive a commission from the new electricity and gas provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
