Electricity and Gas Comparison in these States

Our energy comparison service is only available in states that have a deregulated energy market. Each energy provider can only supply energy to some regions, therefore the number of energy providers that are compared for you differs depending on where you live. In the rest of Australia, you can only purchase energy from one provider in your region.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and decided you want to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new energy provider will give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days during which you can change your mind and go back to your old energy provider.
No, definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). This distributor will continue to supply the energy to your house even if you switch to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your energy bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy energy directly from a distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your energy supply because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. But the final switchover cannot take place until your current provider has issued your final bill, and they cannot do that until after your next meter reading. So, it depends on when your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and will notify your current provider that you are switching away from them. The actual change to the new provider won't happen immediately, because the old provider will need to read your meter again, one final time. and then send you a final bill. Your new provider will start charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that feeds the energy to your premises will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will, however, receive a commission from the new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Save money with these energy -saving tips

Here are some easy to implement tips to reduce your usage of energy

  • Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or getting out via gaps under doors or around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, dress for the weather (warm socks, booties, beanie, jumper).
  • Reduce use of the clothes dryer. Instead, hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Turn off all appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Use less lighting. Rely on natural light if possible.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening the windows at night-time to let the house cool down, and closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Close the doors to rooms that you don't use, so you only heat or cool a smaller space.
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
