Electricity Market Competition in Qld

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation since the late 1990s. The first stage was to establish a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in a different state.

The next step, which occurred sooner in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to create a greater level of competition the energy market was separated into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors manage the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. Every state has between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The market in South East Queensland was completely deregulated on 1 July 2016 . This meant that consumers could switch to a provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.

Two electricity distributors supply all of Queensland

  • Energex
The Energex network distributes electricity in an area covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, which stretches from the border of NSW in the south to Gympie in the north. This covers the major population areas of Brisbane, Ipswich, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
The Ergon Energy network supplies electricity to Queensland including coastal and rural areas and remote communities in outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Tips to lower your electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here is a list of easily implemented tips to reduce your electricity consumption

  • Turn your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Avoid usage of the clothes dryer. Hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Minimise draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or out through the gaps under doors and around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear warm clothing (booties, warm socks, beanie, jumper).
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening the windows at night-time to let the cool air in, and then shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
  • Stop the sun over-heating your home by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Minimise lighting. Use natural light more often, and replace older lights with LED lights.
  • Close doors to areas of the house that you don't use, so you just cool or heat a smaller space.

FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and have made the decision you want to switch gas and electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new gas and electricity provider has to give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you that have ten days during which you can cancel the process and go back to your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). This distributor will continue to supply gas and electricity to your house after you switch to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your gas and electricity bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy gas and electricity directly from your distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be certain that your gas and electricity supply will not be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in under 24 hours. But the switchover can't go ahead until your current provider has sent you your final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It could take up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we'll also notify your current provider that you're changing providers. The actual switch to the new provider will not happen immediately, though, because the old provider needs to read your meter again, one final time. and then issue you their final bill. Your new provider only begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that supplies the energy to your premises will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. Instead, we will be paid a commission by the new gas and electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
