Electricity Market Competition and Deregulation in Adelaide
From the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia has been gradually deregulating. The first stage involved establishing an intra-state electricity network which enabled electricity that was generated in one state to be sold to customers in another state.
The next step, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the dividing up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In order to create more competition the energy market was split into two levels
The distributors manage the delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.
The retailers sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. Every state has between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.
In July 2013, Adelaide's energy market was fully deregulated. This allowed consumers to switch to whichever provider had the cheapest electricity prices.

Reduce your energy bills with these electricity -saving tips
Here are a few easy to implement tips to reduce how much you spend on electricity
- Reduce draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air getting in or out through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
- Instead of turning on the heater, dress for cold weather (beanie, warm socks, booties, jumper).
- Reduce usage of the clothes dryer. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Turn off your appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
- Minimise air conditioning use by opening your windows in the evening allow the cool air in, and shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
- Minimise lighting. Rely on natural light if possible. Turn lights off when you leave the room.
- Stop the sun from over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
- Close doors to rooms that you don't use, so you only have to heat or cool a smaller space.
