Electricity Market Competition in NSW

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been gradually deregulating since the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to a different state.

The next stage, which occurred earlier in some states, was the splitting up of state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to promote more competition the market was divided into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors are responsible for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. States have from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

NSW 's energy market was fully deregulated on 1 July 2014 . This enabled customers to change to another provider that offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by three distributors

  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy distributes electricity regional and country NSW, and also in southern regional QLD.
  • Ausgrid
Ausgrid's network supplies electricity to northern, inner and eastern metropolitan Sydney and in Newcastle and the Hunter region.
  • Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy's network provides electricity to 2.4 million people in households and businesses in the Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands and Sydney's Greater West.

Tips for reducing electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here is a list of easy to implement tips for reducing how much electricity you use

  • Reduce draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air getting in or getting out through the gaps under doors or around windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Dress for the weather, instead of turning on the heater (warm socks, beanie, booties, jumper).
  • Use your clothes dryer less. Hang your clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn all appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Reduce your use of lights by using natural light where possible. Turn lights off when there's no on in the room.
  • Close the doors to areas of your home that you aren't using, so you only cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening allow the house cool down, then closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Prevent the sun over-heating your home by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.

FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and have made the decision you want to switch gas and electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new gas and electricity provider must give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days during which you can change your mind and remain with your current energy provider.
Definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). That distributor continues to supply the gas and electricity to your house even after you change to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your gas and electricity bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy gas and electricity directly from the distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be certain that you won't experience an interruption to your gas and electricity supply when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, often in under 24 hours. But the switchover cannot go ahead until after your current provider has issued you a final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how long until your meter is next due to be read. It be up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and will also notify your present provider that you are changing to another retailer. The actual changeover to your new provider won't happen straight away, though, because your current provider will need to do one final meter reading. then send you their final bill. The new provider starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor who feeds the energy to your home will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will, however, be paid a commission by the new gas and electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
