Electricity Market Competition in SA

The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first stage involved establishing a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in another state.

The next step, which happened earlier in some states, was the dividing up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to produce greater competition the energy market was split into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors look after the delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers do all the interacting with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. Every state has between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

On 1 July 2013 , the electricity market in South Australia was fully deregulated. This allowed consumers to switch to another provider that had the cheapest electricity prices.

South Australia only has one main electricity distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks distributes electricity in South Australia
  • Note, some remote areas of SA are supplied by other companies.

Reduce your energy bills with these electricity -saving tips

Here are a few easy to implement tips to reduce household expenditure on electricity

  • Instead of turning on the heater, dress for cold weather (booties, jumper, warm socks, beanie).
  • Reduce usage of the clothes dryer. Instead, hang the clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Turn appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air entering or escaping through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Prevent the hot sun over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the cooler air in, and shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
  • Minimise lighting. Rely on natural light if possible. Turn lights off when you leave the room.
  • Close doors to rooms that you don't use, so that you only heat or cool a smaller area.

FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and you have made the decision that want to switch gas and electricity providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new gas and electricity provider will give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days to change your mind and stay with your old energy provider.
No. The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). The distributor will continue to supply the gas and electricity to your premises even when you switch to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your gas and electricity bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't purchase gas and electricity directly from a distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be confident that there won't be any interruption to your gas and electricity supply when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often in less than 24 hours. But the switchover cannot happen until your present provider has issued you their final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. Therefore, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It could take up to three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we also inform your current provider that you're switching away from them. The actual move over to your new provider will not happen immediately, because the old provider has to read your meter one final time. then issue you their final bill. Your new provider will begin charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your premises will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will receive a commission from your new gas and electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
