FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and you have chosen to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new electricity provider provides you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to change your mind and go back to your current energy provider.
No. You won't need to do any of that. The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply the electricity to your premises if you change over to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from a distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, there won't be any interruption to your electricity supply because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often within 24 hours. But the switchover won't take place until after your present provider has sent you their final bill, and they cannot do that until after your next meter reading. Therefore, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It could take as long as three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we tell the current provider that you're moving to another provider. The changeover in providers will not happen immediately, though, because the current provider has to do a final meter reading. and then send you their final bill. The new provider begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor that supplies the energy to your house will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips to reduce electricity usage to save on your bills

Here are some easily implemented ways for reducing your usage of electricity

  • Dress for the weather, rather than turn on the heater, (beanie, jumper, warm socks, booties).
  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise hot or cold air entering or escaping via gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn off appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Don't use your clothes dryer as frequently. Instead, dry clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Prevent the hot sun from over-heating rooms by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Minimise lighting through the use of as much natural light as possible.
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that aren't in use, so that you only cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening the windows at night-time to allow the cooler air in, then shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
