Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in Qld

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process which began in the late 1990s. The first stage was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in another state.

The next stage, which happened sooner in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to create greater competition the energy market was divided into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors have the responsibility for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. Every state has from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The electricity market in South East Queensland was completely deregulated on 1 July 2016 . This meant that, for the first time, consumers could switch to another provider who offered the cheapest electricity prices.

There are two distributors who supply electricity to Queensland

  • Energex
The Energex network distributes electricity to an area covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, stretching from the border of NSW to Gympie in the north. Including the major population areas of Brisbane, Ipswich, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
The Ergon Energy network distributes electricity to Queensland including rural areas and coastal as well as the remote communities of outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Tips to reduce electricity consumption to save money

Here are some easily implemented ways to reduce your expenditure on electricity

  • Turn all your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Avoid using your clothes dryer. Hang the clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Eliminate draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or out via gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather (booties, warm socks, jumper, beanie).
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the cool air in, then shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating your home by closing curtains and blinds in rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Close doors to rooms that you aren't using, so that you just cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Minimise lighting. Use natural lighting where possible.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and have made the decision that want to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new electricity provider provides you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and stay with your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). The distributor will continue to supply electricity to your house if you switch over to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from the distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be certain that your electricity supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, usually in under 24 hours. But the switchover won't take place until your current provider has sent your final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It be up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we will also notify your present provider that you're switching away from them. The actual switch in providers will not happen immediately, because your current provider needs to read your meter one final time. and then issue you their final bill. Your new provider begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your home will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. However, we will be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
