The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation was to establish a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to a different state.
The next step, which happened sooner in some states, was the dividing up of state owned electricity monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to produce a greater degree of competition the market was split into two types of entities
- Energy
Distributors
Distributors have the responsibility for the delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the poles and powerlines, but do not deal directly with customers. - Energy Retailers The retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. States have between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.
On 1 July 2013 , the South Australia electricity market was fully deregulated. This meant that customers could now switch to a provider who had cheaper electricity prices.
South Australia has only one main electricity distributor
- SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks supplies electricity in South Australia - Note, electricity in a few remote areas of SA are supplied by other companies.
Tips to lower energy consumption to save on your bills
Here are some easy to implement ways to reduce your expenditure on energy
- Avoid using the clothes dryer. Instead, dry your clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
- Instead of turning on the heater, put on warmer clothing (jumper, beanie, warm socks, booties).
- Turn all your appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
- Eliminate draughts. Prevent hot or cold air entering or escaping via gaps under doors or around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Stop the hot sun over-heating your house by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms where the sun shines in.
- Close the doors to areas of your home that you don't use, so that you just heat or cool a smaller area.
- Minimise air conditioning usage by opening your windows in the evening let the cooler air in, and closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
- Reduce your use of lights. Use natural light more often.
