Australia's electricity market has been gradually deregulating which began in the late 1990s. The first step was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in another state.
Another stage, which occurred sooner in some states, was the breaking up of state owned monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate more competition the market was divided into two types of entities
- Energy Distributors
Distributors manage the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises, and they own and maintain the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers. - Energy Retailers Retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. Each state has from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.
On 1 July 2016 , South East Queensland 's energy market was completely deregulated. This meant that, for the first time, customers could switch to another provider who had cheaper prices.
Two distributors supply electricity to Queensland
- Energex
The Energex network supplies electricity to premises in a region covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, which stretches from the NSW border to Gympie in the north. This includes the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Brisbane, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay. - Ergon Energy
Ergon Energy distributes electricity to Queensland including rural areas and coastal and the remote communities in outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.
Tips to lower your electricity consumption to save money
Here is a list of easy to implement ways to reduce your usage of electricity
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Eliminate draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air blowing in or leaving through the gaps under doors or around your windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
- Avoid usage of your clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or instead, use an indoor clothing rack.
- Rather than turn on the heater, dress for cold weather (beanie, booties, jumper, warm socks).
- Turn your appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
- Close the doors to rooms that you aren't using, so you only have to heat or cool a smaller area.
- Use less lighting. Use natural lighting where possible, and replace older lighting with LED lights.
- Stop the sun over-heating rooms by closing blinds and curtains in rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
- Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening the windows in the evening allow the cooler air in, then closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
