The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first stage was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in another state.
The next step, which occurred sooner in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to create a greater level of competition the energy market was divided into two types of entities
- Energy Distributors
Distributors manage the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers. - Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. Every state has from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.
The market in South Australia was completely deregulated on 1 July 2013 . This meant that, for the first time, consumers could switch to a provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.
There is only one main electricity distributor in SA
- SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks supplies electricity in South Australia - Note, some remote areas of SA are supplied by other companies.
Tips to reduce electricity consumption to save money
Here are some easily implemented ways to reduce household expenditure on electricity
- Turn your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
- Avoid using your clothes dryer. Hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
- Rather than turn on the heater, wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather (booties, warm socks, beanie, jumper).
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Minimise draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or out via gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
- Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening the windows at night-time to let the cool air in, then shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.
- Stop the sun over-heating your home by closing curtains and blinds in rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
- Minimise lighting. Use natural lighting where possible.
- Close doors to rooms that you aren't using, so you just cool or heat a smaller space.
