Here is a list of easily implemented tips for reducing your expenditure on your energy bills
- Wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather, instead of turning on the heater (booties, jumper, warm socks, beanie).
- Turn appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air entering or escaping through the gaps under doors and around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
- Use the clothes dryer less. Instead, hang the clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
- Prevent the hot sun over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
- Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the cooler air in, and then shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
- Minimise lighting by making use of the available natural light and replace older lights with energy efficient LED lighting.
- Close the doors to rooms that aren't in use, so that you only heat or cool a smaller area.
