FAQ about switching energy providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and you have chosen to switch energy providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new energy provider allows you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to change your mind and go back to your current energy provider.
No. You won't need to do any of that. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). This distributor continues to supply the energy to your premises even if you switch over to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your energy bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't purchase energy directly from a distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, there won't be any interruption to your energy supply because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often within 24 hours. However, the final switchover will not take place until your present provider has sent you their final bill, and they can't do that until after the next time they read your meter. Therefore, it depends on how long until your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we tell your current provider that you are changing to another retailer. The changeover in providers won't happen straight away, though, because the old provider has to do a final meter reading. and then send you their final bill. Your new provider will start charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who feeds the energy to your premises continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by your new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips to lower energy consumption to save on your bills

Here are some easy to implement ways to reduce household expenditure on energy

  • Avoid using the clothes dryer. Instead, dry clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, put on warmer clothing (beanie, jumper, warm socks, booties).
  • Turn off appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise hot or cold air entering or escaping via gaps under doors or around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Prevent the hot sun from over-heating rooms by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Reduce your use of lights. Use natural light more often.
  • Close the doors to areas of your home that you don't use, so that you only cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows at night-time to allow the cooler air in, and closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
