FAQ about switching electricity providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and have made the decision you want to switch electricity providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity provider will give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days during which you can change your mind and remain with your current energy provider.
Definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). That distributor continues to supply the electricity to your house even if you switch to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from a distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be certain that you won't experience an interruption to your electricity supply when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often within 24 hours. But the switchover cannot take place until your current provider has issued you a final bill, and they can't do that until after the next time they read your meter. Therefore, it depends on when your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and will also notify your current provider that you are switching away from them. The actual changeover to your new provider won't happen immediately, because the old provider will need to do one final meter reading. and then send you their final bill. Your new provider will start charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that feeds the energy to your premises will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will, however, be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Save money with these electricity -saving tips

Here are some easy to implement tips to reduce household expenditure on electricity

  • Turn all appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, dress for the weather (warm socks, beanie, booties, jumper).
  • Reduce use of the clothes dryer. Hang your clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Reduce draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air getting in or getting out via gaps under doors or around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Use less lighting. Rely on natural light if possible.
  • Close the doors to rooms that you don't use, so you only cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening allow the house cool down, and closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Prevent the sun over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
