The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation since the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in a different state.
The next step, which occurred earlier in some states, was the dividing up of the state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to produce a greater level of competition the energy market was divided into two levels
- Energy
Distributors
Distributors are responsible for the delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers. - Energy Retailers The retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. The states have from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.
On 1 July 2016 , the market in South East Queensland was fully deregulated. This enabled consumers to change to another provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.
Electricity in Queensland is supplied by two distributors
- Energex
Energex supplies electricity in an area covering about 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, stretching from the border of NSW in the south to Gympie in the north. This includes Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Redlands and Moreton Bay. - Ergon Energy
The Ergon Energy network distributes electricity to rural and coastal areas of Queensland as well as the remote communities of outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.
Tips to reduce your energy consumption and lower your bills
Here are some easily implemented tips for reducing your expenditure on energy
- Dress for cold weather, instead of turning on the heater (booties, beanie, warm socks, jumper).
- Turn all appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
- Use your clothes dryer less often. Instead, hang clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
- Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air entering or escaping via gaps under doors and around windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Prevent the sun over-heating your house by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
- Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows during the night to let the cooler air in, then shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
- Close doors to areas of your home that you aren't using, so you only heat or cool a smaller area.
- Reduce the use of lights by using natural light where possible.
