FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and have made the decision that want to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new electricity provider has to give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and stay with your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). The distributor will continue to supply electricity to your house after you switch to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, but they purchase the energy at wholesale prices from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from the distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that your electricity supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, usually within 24 hours. But the final switchover can't go ahead until your current provider has sent your final bill, and they'll only be able to do that after your next meter reading. So, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will also notify your current provider that you're changing providers. The actual switch in providers will not happen immediately, though, because the old provider needs to read your meter one final time. and then issue you a final bill. Your new provider only begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that supplies the energy to your premises will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. However, we will be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in Brisbane

Since the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process. The first stage was to establish an intra-state electricity network which enabled electricity produced in one state to be sold to customers in a different state.

The next stage, which happened sooner in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In order to create greater competition the energy market was separated into two levels

Distributors have the responsibility for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.

The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. Every state has between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The market in Brisbane was completely deregulated in July 2016 . This meant that consumers could switch to another provider who offered the cheapest electricity prices.

There is one electricity distributor in Brisbane

  • Energex
The Energex network distributes electricity to an area covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, which stretches from the border of NSW in the south to Gympie in the north. Including the major population areas of Brisbane, Ipswich, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.

Tips to lower your electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here is a list of easily implemented tips to reduce how much electricity you use

  • Eliminate draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or out through the gaps under doors and around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn all your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear warm clothing (booties, warm socks, jumper, beanie).
  • Avoid usage of the clothes dryer. Hang the clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the cool air in, and then shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating your home by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Close doors to areas of the house that you don't use, so that you just cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Minimise lighting. Use natural light more often, and replace older lights with LED lights.
