Here are a few easy to implement tips for reducing your usage of electricity
- Minimise usage of your clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
- Eliminate draughts. Minimise hot or cold air blowing in or leaving through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
- Turn all your appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
- Rather than turn on the heater, put on warmer clothing (beanie, jumper, booties, warm socks).
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Close doors to areas of the house that you aren't using, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller area.
- Minimise lighting by using natural light where possible.
- Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening your windows at night-time to allow the cooler air in, and shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
- Stop the hot sun over-heating rooms by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
