FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

This section contains frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and decided that you'd like to switch electricity and gas providers.

It's okay if you change your mind because your new electricity and gas provider will allow you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and stay with your current energy provider.
Definitely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). The distributor continues to supply the electricity and gas to your house after you change over to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity and gas bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity and gas directly from your distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, your electricity and gas supply will not be interrupted because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often within 24 hours. But the final switchover won't go ahead until after your current provider has issued you their final bill, and they can't do that until after your next meter reading. Therefore, it depends on how long until your next meter reading. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with your new energy provider, and we'll notify the current provider that you are changing to another retailer. The actual changeover in providers will not happen straight away, though, because the current provider will need to do a meter reading again, one final time. and then send you their final bill. The new provider only begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who supplies the energy to your house will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. Instead, we will receive a commission from the new electricity and gas provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips for how to use less electricity to save on your bills

Here is a list of easily implemented ways for reducing how much you spend on electricity

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn off your appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather, rather than turn on the heater, (warm socks, jumper, booties, beanie).
  • Don't use the clothes dryer as frequently. Instead, dry the clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air getting in or getting out through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Reduce the use of lights through the use of as much natural light as possible. Turn the lights off if there's no none in the room.
  • Stop the sun from over-heating your home by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Close doors to areas of your home that aren't in use, so you just heat or cool a smaller space.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening windows at night to allow the house cool down, and then shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
