Electricity Market Competition in Qld

The Australian electricity market has been gradually deregulating since the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation involved establishing a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered in another state.

Another stage, which occurred earlier in some states than others, was the breaking up of state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to produce more competition the market was divided into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
    The distributors are responsible for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and maintain the poles and powerlines, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers are the ones who sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. States have between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

On 1 July 2016 , South East Queensland 's energy market was fully deregulated. This enabled customers to switch to the provider that had cheaper electricity prices.

Two distributors supply electricity to Queensland

  • Energex
    Energex supplies electricity to premises in a region covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, which stretches from the NSW border in the south to Gympie in the north. This covers the major population areas of Brisbane, Logan, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Redlands and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
    Ergon Energy distributes electricity to Queensland including coastal and rural areas as well as the remote communities of outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Here is a list of easy to implement tips to reduce your expenditure on energy

  • Minimise use of the clothes dryer. Hang your clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn off all appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air entering or escaping through the gaps under doors or around windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather (beanie, booties, warm socks, jumper).
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating rooms by closing the blinds and curtains in rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Reduce your use of lights. Rely on natural light if possible, and replace old lights with LED lights.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening your windows in the evening allow the cooler air in, then closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Close the doors of rooms that you don't use, so you only cool or heat a smaller area.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and you've chosen to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new energy provider must give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days during which you can change your mind and remain with your current energy provider.
No. You won't need to do any of that. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). That distributor continues to supply the energy to your premises even after you switch to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your energy bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't purchase energy directly from the distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your energy supply because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, usually in under 24 hours. However, the final switchover cannot go ahead until your old provider has issued you a final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on when your next meter reading takes place. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and will tell your current provider that you are leaving them. The changeover to the new provider won't happen straight away, because the old provider has to do one final meter reading. and then issue you their final bill. Your new provider starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor who feeds the energy to your premises continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
