Australia's electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation ever since the late 1990s. The first stage was to establish a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in other states.
Another stage, which happened sooner in some states, was the breaking up of the state owned monopolies into several competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate better competition the energy market was separated into two levels
- Energy Distributors
Distributors have the responsibility for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, and don't engage directly with customers. - Energy Retailers Retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. Every state has between 1 and 3 distributors and up to 30 retailers.
On 1 July 2014 , NSW 's electricity market was completely deregulated. This meant that consumers could change to another provider that had cheaper prices.
Electricity in NSW is supplied by the following distributors
- Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy supplies electricity to 2.4 million people in homes and businesses in the Southern Highlands, Sydney's Greater West and the Blue Mountains. - Ausgrid
Ausgrid supplies energy throughout eastern, inner and northern metropolitan Sydney and in Newcastle and the Hunter region. - Essential Energy
Essential Energy supplies electricity country and regional NSW, and also throughout southern regional QLD.
Tips to reduce your electricity usage and lower your bills
Here is a list of easily implemented tips for reducing household expenditure on electricity
- Use the clothes dryer less. Dry clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
- Turn all your appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
- Wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather, instead of turning on the heater (beanie, jumper, booties, warm socks).
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Eliminate draughts. Minimise hot or cold air blowing in or leaving through the gaps under doors and around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
- Close the doors to rooms that aren't in use, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller area.
- Minimise lighting by making use of the available natural light and replace older lights with energy efficient LED lighting.
- Reduce air conditioning use by opening your windows at night-time to allow the cooler air in, and then shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
- Stop the hot sun over-heating rooms by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
