FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and you have made the decision you want to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new electricity provider must give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days during which you can change your mind and go back to your old energy provider.
No. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). This distributor will continue to supply the electricity to your premises even after you switch to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from the distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be confident that you won't experience an interruption to your electricity supply when you switch retailers, because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the final switchover cannot go ahead until your present provider has sent you a final bill, and they can only do that once they've read your meter one final time. Therefore, it depends on when your next meter reading takes place. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and will also inform your current provider that you are leaving them. The change in providers won't happen straight away, because the old provider has to read your meter again, one final time. then send you their final bill. Your new provider starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor who feeds the energy to your premises continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will, however, be paid a commission by your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Reduce your power bills with these electricity -saving tips

Here is a list of easy to implement tips to reduce how much electricity you use

  • Minimise use of the clothes dryer. Instead, hang clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air entering or escaping through the gaps under doors or around windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather (booties, beanie, warm socks, jumper).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn all appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Prevent the sun over-heating your house by closing the blinds and curtains in rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows during the night to let the cooler air in, then closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Close the doors of rooms that you don't use, so you only heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Reduce your use of lights. Rely on natural light if possible, and replace old lights with LED lights.
