Electricity and Gas Comparison in these States

Our electricity comparison service is only available in states that have a deregulated electricity market. Each energy provider is only able to supply energy to some regions, and therefore the number of electricity providers that are compared for you differs depending on where you live. In the rest of Australia, it is only possible to purchase energy from one provider in your region.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and you have made the decision to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity provider has to give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to cancel the process and remain with your old energy provider.
No. The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). That distributor will continue to supply the electricity to your premises when you change to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from your distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be confident that your electricity supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often in less than 24 hours. However, the final switchover can't happen until after your present provider has sent your final bill, and they can't do that until they've done your final meter reading. Therefore, it depends on when your meter is next due to be read. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will also inform the current provider of your move away from them. The change to the new provider won't happen immediately, because the current provider has to do a meter reading one final time. then issue you their final bill. The new provider only starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that feeds the energy to your house continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. However, we will be paid a commission by your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips for reducing electricity usage and lower your bills

Here are a few easily implemented tips for reducing household expenditure on your energy bills

  • Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather, instead of turning on the heater (jumper, beanie, warm socks, booties).
  • Turn all your appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent hot or cold air entering or escaping through gaps under doors and around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Use your clothes dryer less frequently. Instead, dry your clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating your house by closing blinds and curtains in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Close doors to areas of the house that aren't in use, so that you just heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening your windows in the evening let the cooler air in, and then closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Use less lighting by making use of the available natural light.
